Complete Makeup Brush Guide: Best Foundation Brush, Kabuki Brush, Powder Brush & More

Understanding your brushes is the first step for seamless application. The right shape and density can elevate coverage, refine blending, and ensure a smooth, professional finish. Designed for performance and sustainability, every INIKA brush features ultra-soft vegan fibres and biodegradable PLA handles derived from corn and cassava.

Mastery begins with understanding the tools: Let’s break each brush down...

Kabuki Brush

What it is: Short, dense, rounded brush.
Use with: Loose Mineral Foundation.
How to use: Swirl into powder, tap off excess so minerals sink into bristles, buff onto skin in soft circular motions.
Why: The density presses minerals into the skin for even, buildable, airbrushed coverage.

Foundation Brush

What it is: Softly rounded, mid-sized foundation brush.
Use with: Liquid Foundation & BB Cream.
How to use: Apply product to the back of the hand, dab the brush, blend in circular motions until seamless.
Why: Dense, rounded head ensures even, buildable coverage with a smooth finish.

Flat Top Kabuki Brush

What it is: Flat, dense buffing brush.
Use with: Serum Foundation.
How to use: Shake the foundation first, and apply it to the back of your hand. Blend the brush into the product and transfer to the skin, using gentle circular motions. Build up as desired.
Why: The flat surface presses product into the skin for fuller, smoother coverage.

Sculptor Brush

What it is: Angled, dense contour brush.
Use with: Baked Contour Duo.
How to use: Apply under cheekbones from the outer face inward, blend. Add definition to the forehead and jawline.
Why: The defined angle creates a precise, sculpted structure.

Powder Brush

What it is: Large, fluffy, full coverage brush.
Use with: Baked Mineral Bronzer or any face powder.
How to use: Dip and sweep across larger areas, dabbing and swirling. For bronzer, apply to forehead, cheekbones, and jawline - where the sun naturally would hit.
Why: The size ensures even distribution and a diffused, sun-kissed finish.

Cheek Topper Brush

What it is: Wide, medium-density, cheek brush.
Use with: Baked Blush Duo or Lip & Cheek Cream.
How to use: Coat the brush, tap the base on a hard surface for the product to sink in. Blend in small circular motions along cheeks and up to cheekbones.
Why: The wide shape distributes colour evenly across the cheeks, while the medium density ensures a soft, diffused blend without patchiness.

Setting Brush

What it is: Medium, fluffy, domed brush.
Use with: Mineral Setting Powder, Baked Foundation, Baked Illuminisor.
How to use: Dip just the tip into product, tap, press under eyes or targeted areas, lightly buff edges.
Why: Smaller shape and long bristles allow precise setting and highlighting without disturbing the base.

Brow Brush

What it is: Dual-ended angled brush with spoolie.
Use with: Brow Palette.
How to use: Use the angled tip to fill brows, following the natural shape. Blend and groom with spoolie, apply wax if desired.
Why: The precision tip defines shape, and the spoolie softens and sets for polished brows.

Shadow Brush

What it is: Fluffy, pigment-focused eye brush.
Use with: Eyeshadow Quad palettes.
How to use: Coat brush, sweep across lid and crease, blend outward to soften edges. Repeat as desired to increase pigment and add additional shades.
Why: The bristle softness and length delivers colour payoff while allowing seamless blending.

Detail Brush

What it is: Small, short, bristled precision brush.
Use with: Concealer or eyeshadow.
How to use: Tap into the product and apply to targeted areas such as under the eyes or outer corners.
Why: Compact shape allows controlled, refined placement.
